Insights on the Oscars

As promised the Oscars was a spectacular night. In the Chapter 11 Theater, Billy Crystal delivered a marvelous opening. Justin Bieber in the middle of Midnight in Paris (promising to bring Billy the 18 to 24 demo) delivered brilliantly. Although I think Billy’s naming Justin a young Frank Sinatra was very generous. Then, the crowd roared at Billy’s joke that no way could ‘Hugo’ be a Scorsese film since “no one got wacked”. The Opening ended with the perfect laugh–Billy impersonating Tin Tin. Some other fun facts: According to preliminary Nielsen data from Adweek, ABC’s Oscars presentation averaged 39.3 million total viewers, marking [...]

Earth Day movie promotion that benefits a good cause

Jane Goodall 4

When we went to the theater over February break, Disney Nature’s upcoming movie ‘Chimpanzee’ burst from the big screen. The “See Chimpanzee, Save Chimpanzees promotion” caught our attention especially the children’s. They loved the past “give backs” of other Disney Nature movies. The trailer promises if we attend the movie during the opening week in April a percentage of our ticket sales will benefit Jane Goodall‘s Chimpanzee foundation.  Our family is very interested in the environment, so we will defintely go to an Earth Day Opening. Morover, the promotion capitalizes on a compelling trend that many parents enjoy spending dollars on fun events that [...]

What are you favorite Apps?

Glamour (magazine)

Sometimes, I get overwhelmed with the multitude of Apps available. So I have to go back to my “Board of Directors” for their best recommendations on which Apps I really need to make life easier.  Like the famous theory of Mary Lou Quinlan of ” Just Ask A Woman” fame, my girlfriends are my board of directors. Their recommendations help guide all types of purchase decisions from what type of minivan to buy (yes, we sold out) to what everyday technology is vital to understand as our children become users. Glamour Magazine offers a new app where you buy instantly the outfits [...]

Oscars: a favorite night of the year

The Oscars is truly a the favorite night of the year in our house. We can’t wait to see Billy Crystal return as this year’s host.  While Hugh Jackman ranks as the ”hottest” host, Billy is one of the funniest and will deliver marvelous monologues. Presenters announced thus far include Tom Hanks, Tom Cruise, Jennifer Lopez and Halle Berry.  A few years ago we had a great party complete with a red carpet and a feast. However, none of this year’s films really made their mark to demand the big fanfare of the past. Guess, I will spend my time looking for the Elton John Pepsi commercial for the third time.  Ellen [...]

Oscars: Proof of Award Show Advertising Vitality

February 24, 2012
Best Actress Academy Award

The Oscars have evolved to become another  “sold-out” event for brand advertisers just weeks after “the most watched” Super Bowl ever.    For big advertisers and even movie executives, the Academy Awards  can create a unique complete 360 degree platform to reach consumers with a less cluttered environment due to program timing. A 30:spot fetches about $1.7 million this year. Last year, 40% of total ad revenue came from three companies: Hyundai, JC Penney and Coca-Cola.  A few other well-known advertisers stand out for their loyalty and longevity. McDonald’s has appeared in the program every year since 1992 and American Express since 1993. An ironic fact is the [...]

The Oscars drive movie ticket purchases

Every since I was little I have always loved the Oscars. The dresses, the glamorous hosts and the speeches enthralled me for hours. In the mid-90′s while working at Revlon, we lived for the Oscars broadcast since the company spent millions behind its sponsorship.  We would spend Sundays at the local theater viewing three movies back to back. While many of us now “live stream” movies on the web during the week, hitting the movie theater is still a wonderful experience.   Although the cost of the movies continues to increase, we still value the opportunity to escape everyday life by enjoying a flick on the big screen. Adweek features wonderful [...]

The Shift Since the Industrial Revolution

This chart and its stats say it all. Just think about how technology has changed in our lifetimes. I remember growing up without an answering machine and actually practicing telephone manners.  In college, we wrote our papers on typewriters.  I have fun imagining what technological revolutions  our children will see.   Related articles Send to Kindle
