In the spirit of earth week and all the great events happening in our community, we wanted to highlight some of our favorite eco-friendly sites, events and causes. These sites have helped us learn how to compost along with the big 3 our children recite at school: recycle, reduce and reuse.
Websites:
- Catalogue Choice.org: since we signed up three years ago we have cut our junk mail by over 50%.
- Ecomii.com: gives great tips such as eliminating virtual vampires by unplugging cell phone chargers and how to pack a waste free lunch
- TheOnlineMom: features some great earth day tips. Discover with your family new trails with a free new app from the Sierra Club ow.ly/aqQD1. Would you believe that only 10% of the 140 million cellphones we trash in the US are recycled. Donate them here: bit.ly/tHpP0P
Favorite Brands:
- Underarmour: because they make clothes from recyclable bottles and they are running a great Earth day free-shipping promotion
- Disney pictures: Go see Chimpanzee because the movie gives back this week. Note: Common Sense says not appropriate for children younger than 6. Check out the Earth Day movie promotion that benefits a good cause
- Origins: because the ingredients are natural and are delivered in eco-friendly packaging. Also, Origins offers a super cool Earth day pledge
Causes:
- Sustainable Playland.Org: Great article on the vision in The New York Times ow.ly/ar0aV
- Sanetrash.org: Mark your calendar for “Kids take out the trash concert” on June 1st
- Safe Routes to School/Rye YMCA: the best thing we can do for the environment and our communities is getting our children safely walking and biking to school
