As you enter the front of the lodge, you are charmed by the warm and inviting foyer, and the helpful staff is ready to grant your every wish. We had the pleasure of visiting in February, when Lake Placid offers every winter sport imaginable.

The lodge itself offers the incredible amenities of a world-class resort. We were pleased to find that our suite had a washer and dryer and a full kitchen. The bathrooms had heated floors, and we all had a wonderful night’s sleep in the extremely comfortable beds. At our door in the morning was the New York Times digest, the ultimate eco-friendly perk for us New Yorkers. Our first morning we grabbed a complimentary cup of delicious coffee and hit the gym, which offers both state-of-the-art equipment plus the revitalizing treat of the finest fresh fruit.

After working out, we went for a swim in the beautiful indoor and outdoor pool. We love swimming outside in 10-degree weather with steam all around and ice in your hair and have found that nothing is better to cleanse and refresh our mind and body than sitting in a hot tub interspersed by quick rolls down a snow-covered bank nearby.

After our swim, we strolled through the charming town, two-time site of the Winter Olympics and many World Cups, and explored all of the shops. We then we had a blast on the Lake Placid Blobsled Experience, which gave us the chance to feel like an Olympic slider. In the evening we headed back to the lodge for a family film in the gorgeous theater in the basement of the resort. Our children really enjoyed the complimentary popcorn. After the movie, we spent some time in the game room, where bowling kept even the “big kids” occupied for hours.

The next day we really enjoyed skiing at Whiteface Mountain, which has vertical for any skier from advanced to beginner. Although it was cold, the sun was shining so brightly we had to wear our sunglasses. After a day on the slopes, we really enjoyed apres ski and a light dinner at Kanu, which is in the lodge upstairs. There we had one of the best Caesar salads ever!

After dinner, we skated at the quaint outdoor rink, which again kept even the “big kids” busy for hours. The children had many laughs as their parents struggled to reclaim their ice hockey glory days.
The S’mores Roasting Fireplace at Whiteface Lodge
When we were nearly totally exhausted, we enjoyed making s’mores over the fire at the lodge next door. Roasting marshmallows on their outdoor patio made memories to last a lifetime. To work off the s’mores, we just had to take another wonderful evening swim under the stars in the outdoor heated pool. It was just heavenly.
