Enjoying the I Dream Too Much SWSX Premiere
We are so excited that this fantastic film, which we covered in a recent post, will now be screening in our area. You might remember that we really enjoyed attending the premiere at SXSW in Austin in March, where we not only met the cast but also connected with screenwriter Katie Cokinos, producer Jay Thames and executive producer Rick Linklater (who also produced the Oscar-nominated feature Boyhood).

The Manhattan Film Festival is geared toward giving new filmmakers in the indie community a chance to show their movies to a wider audience. Accordingly, the Manhattan debut of I Dream Too Much is scheduled to be held at The Players Theatre, 115 Macdougal Street, which is between West 3rd and Bleecker Streets. Screenwriter Katie Cokinos summarizes her vision for I Dream Too Much this way. “That train is headed to the city. I wish we were on it.” She adds, “Dora and her new friend Abbey discuss and dream of a better place in I Dream Too Much, and their dialogue captures how I felt growing up in Beaumont, Texas. Every month I would receive New York City in my mailbox–Interview, Women’s Wear Daily and Vogue–and from those publications I believed (and knew) everything smart, cutting-edge and, well, fabulous emanated from Manhattan. So for my film, I Dream Too Much, to be screening (opening night, no less) at the Manhattan Film Festival–I think my heart just skipped a beat!”
Go See I Dream Too Much Debut at the Manhattan Film Festival
I Dream Too Much is a film for women by women and the debut of the movie production company Pantheon of Women (POW). The movie tells the story of three generations of women finding their dreams and forging new paths. Diane Ladd, Eden Brolin and Danielle Brooks play their roles with richness and integrity. Dora is a recent college graduate who finds herself back home, studying for the LSAT, while her friends travel the globe. When her Great Aunt Vera injures herself, Dora volunteers to help care for her and travels to Vera’s isolated estate to help out. Although the last thing the independent Vera wants is a caretaker, Dora fetches sweaters, studies for the LSAT, and trashes her own attempts at poetry. Fighting feelings of isolation and boredom, Dora begins spending more and more time with a colorful group of locals, leading her to uncover Vera’s hidden past and allowing the two women to forge a stronger bond. To their mutual surprise, Vera helps Dora through her poetic muddle, enabling Dora to discover her own unique voice, while at the same time Vera rediscovers hers.

POW‘s next film will be a historical feature, scripted by Austin-based writer Sarah Bird, about a woman who served with the Buffalo Soldiers, the first peacetime all-black cavalry regiments in the regular U.S. Army.
For now, though, we can’t wait to see the New York premiere of I Dream Too Much and look forward to seeing many more female-driven films from POW.
