Saluting Our Heroes! Planes: Fire & Rescue presented us with a teachable moment as we asked our children to appreciate those who overcome great odds to keep us safe from fires and other weather disasters. Yet again Disney provides excellent family entertainment while emphasizing some important life lessons.

Our children cheered with delight when they heard that Planes: Fire & Rescue, the new 3D computer-animated sequel to Planes, was dedicated to our brave American firefighters.  Dusty Crop Hopper, the voice of Dane Cook from the original Planes movie, decides he needs to help his hometown by becoming a firefighter to secure the certificate of operation for the local airfield.  He must put his own health issues aside in order to train firefighters to battle blazes in the nearby canyons. After many trials and tribulations that test both his patience and bravery, he is able to help stop a major catastrophe.

One of the many important lessons learned from the movie is how vital it is to listen to your local safety officials when they give you instructions or tell you to evacuate in times of crisis.   We are reminded of how we will be forever grateful to all of the firefighters in the tri-state area who did so much to help us out during Hurricane Sandy.

Disney continues to do such a wonderful job with teachable moments in many of their recent kids’ films, such as Million Dollar Arm and Maleficent.  They currently have a slew of fun new movies coming out soon that we can’t wait to take the kids to see.

Among them is the upcoming Guardians of the Galaxy, which is opening on August 1st.  Watch the trailer here:
